What is Avelox?
Avelox is a fourth-generation synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial drug that belongs to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotic drugs. It was developed by Bayer MG and FDA approved in 1999. Avelox works by stopping the bacteria from developing. Thus, Avelox is an effective drug for treating different bacterial infections. However, it is not effective in treating viral infections such as the flu or the common cold.

What are the indications for using Avelox?
Avelox is an oral drug that is prescribed as a treatment for bacterial infections. It can be given to patients with infections of the skin, stomach, lungs or sinus. More specifically, Avelox can be prescribed as a treatment for commonly acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, and complicated/uncomplicated skin infections.

What is the dosage for Avelox?
Avelox is an oral drug that is available in the form of 400mg tablets or as an intravenous injection. The exact dosage of this antibiotic and duration of treatment should be decided by the treating physician as it has to correlate with the patient’s condition, its severity, and medical history. Avelox is usually taken once a day at evenly spaced intervals. The constant amount of medicine in the body will lead to better results. It can be administered with or without food but with a glass of water.

What are the contraindications for using Avelox?
Avelox should never be used by people who are allergic to it or to similar antibiotics. It is also proscribed for use by individuals with a medical history of myasthenia gravis. Avelox may not be safe for patients with diabetes, liver or kidney disease, epilepcy, history of QT syndrome, brain tumor, or heart rhythm disorder. Also, tell your medical practitioner if you have arthritis, or other joint problems, muscle or nerve disorder, or a low level of potassium in the blood, as Avelox may cause more harm than good.

What are the adverse effects of Avelox?
Some of the common side effects include dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, trouble sleeping, weakness, and lightheadedness. It has also been known to cause some serious side effects such as a change in the amount of urine, unusual bleeding or bruising, signs of liver problems, persistent vomiting or nausea, stomach pain, vision changes, irregular heartbeats, or signs of a new infection. If you notice any of these, get medical help as soon as possible.
