What is Flagyl?
Flagyl (Metronidazole) is an antibacterial drug used for killing off protozoa and anaerobic bacteria, which causes various infections. Flagyl was developed in France at the Rhone-Poulenc laboratories in the 1950’s. Though it was initially intended to be an antiparasitic agent, its antibacterial properties became known in 1962, when a patient being treated with Flagyl was cured of several other infections, which was not believed possible. Since then, Flagyl has spread globally, and can be found under many names. Due to its effectiveness and wide range of use, Flagyl has been included in the WHO’s List of Essential Medicines. Flagyl works by disrupting the synthesis of microbial cells, impeding further spread of infection.

What are the indications for using Flagyl?
Flagyl is accepted as a form of treatment for:

  • Bacterial vaginosis – a vaginal disease caused by an imbalance of bacterial flora in the affected region.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease – an inflammation of the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes, which causes scars, adhesions, and whose long-term consequences often include infertility.
  • Clostridium difficile colitis – an infection of the large intestine by spore-forming bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, and sometimes bloating and abdominal pain.
  • Aspiration pneumonia – a serious infection of the respiratory system.
  • Gingivitis – a periodontal disease that leads to bone resorption and sometimes tooth loss.

Other conditions this drug is compatible with include trichomoniasis, amebiasis, septicemia, endocarditis, etc. Some off-label uses include treatment of Crohn's disease, Giardiasis, Hepatic encephalopathy, and some animal infections.

What is the dosage of Flagyl?
Flagyl normally comes in the form of tablets or capsules which should be taken orally. Dosage depends on the condition being treated and some of the patient’s biological factors. For example, treatment of trichomoniasis consists of two grams of Flagyl per day. For amebiasis, the standard dose is 750 mg three times a day, and a dose of up to 4g is standard for anaerobic bacterial infections.

What are the contraindications for using Flagyl?
Flagyl is contraindicated for everyone allergic to it, as well as patients who take alcohol or alcohol-containing drugs, patients taking blood-thinner drugs (Warfarin, Lomitapide, etc.), and to those who were injected with live bacterial vaccines, seizure drugs, lithium, busulfan, and several others. The whole list can be found on the drug’s webpage.

What are the adverse effects of Flagyl?
Certain side effects, including nausea, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, stomach pain, and dry mouth have been experienced by patients.
