What is Florinef?
Florinef is a synthetic corticosteroid, which contains Fludrocortisone acetate as main ingredient. It possesses moderate glucocorticoid activity and high mineralocorticoid activity. It is widely used for its mineralocorticoid properties in partial replacement therapy for primary and secondary adrenocortical insufficiency in Addison’s disease and salt loosing form of adrenogenital syndrome. The drug is included in WHO list of essential medicines and comes in tablets for oral administration with 0, 1 mg strength.

When is Florinef indicated?
Florinef is indicated to treat low glucocorticoid levels caused by adrenal gland diseases, such as adrenocortical insufficiency, Addison’s disease and cerebral salt wasting syndrome. It can be administered alone or in combination therapy with glucocorticoids. The drug is also used as confirmation test for Conn’s syndrome diagnosis (fludrocortisone suppressing test).

How to take Florinef?
Florinef is typically received once daily in a dose of 0, 1 - 0, 2 mg regardless to meals. For Addison’s disease treatment the drug should be received concomitantly with 10 - 37, 5 mg of cortisone or 10-30 mg of hydrocortisone in divided doses. In some cases the prescribing physician may recommend to take the drug three times a week. Remissions or exacerbations of the disease may require the necessity of dosage adjustment. Do not adjust the dose on your own without your doctor’s approval, as it may lead to unwanted sequela.

What are Florinef side effects?
Florinef side effects are mainly caused by its mineralocorticoid activity and include edema, hypertension, cardiac enlargement, hypokalemia and congestive heart failure. When small doses are administered concomitantly with glucocorticoids, the side effects are usually not a problem. However, long-term administration of the drug may provoke headaches, gastrointestinal disorders and menstrual irregularities.

What are Florinef contraindications?
Florinef is contraindicated to people with known hypersensitivity to corticosteroids as well as to patients with systemic fungal infections. Inform your doctor if you have a history of bleeding problems, blood-clotting, diabetes, osteoporosis, kidney or liver disease, mental disorders, diseases of the endocrine system, eye and heart problems. Abrupt withdrawal of the drug may produce severe adverse reactions.
