What is Lopid?
Lopid is a lipid regulating drug that contains gemfibrozil as an active component. When orally ingested, gemfibrozil lowers the amount of triglycerides (fats) in the bloodstream, also decreasing the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (LDL is the type of cholesterol that causes serious problems like atherosclerosis and increases the chance of heart disease).
What are the indications for using Lopid?
Lopid is prescribed to patients with hyperlipidemia conditions (increased levels of triglycerides in the blood serum) as an addition to the diet control in an effort to normalize the amount of fat in the blood stream. It is also used as coronary heart disease prevention, when blood vessel fat clotting inhibits normal blood supply to the heart.
What is the dosage of Lopid?
One tablet of Lopid contains 600 mg of gemfibrozil. The recommended dose of the active component is 1200 mg per day for adults, so this amounts to two tablets of Lopid per day. The tablets should be taken separately, around 30 minutes before meals. Blood tests for cholesterol and visits to your doctor will determine the length of the course to guarantee the best outcome.
What are the contraindications for using Lopid?
Possibility of allergy to gemfibrozil should be taken into consideration when prescribing Lopid. Kidney, liver and gall bladder dysfunctions are among the contradictions for Lopid. Some prescription drugs should not be taken together with Lopid – consult your doctor to be sure there will not be any drug conflicts.
What are the adverse effects of Lopid?
Among some of the Lopid side effects and complications include various gastrointestinal reactions, like indigestion, mild stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Very rare cases of appendicitis have been observed among the patients taking Lopid.
