What is Tetracycline?
Tetracycline is a polyketide antibiotic with a wide spectrum. Its main ingredient is tetracycline hydrochloride, which works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, causing them to die. The antibiotic is included in the WHO list of essential medicines and is commonly used to treat various bacterial infections, acne, rosacea and Helicobacter pylori. It is available as tablets for oral administration with 250 mg and 500 mg strength.

When is Tetracycline indicated?
Tetracycline is the first-line treatment for mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia, meningococci, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. It is prescribed for the treatment of respiratory and urinary infections caused by Klebsiella, nongonococcal urethritis caused by Ureaplasma urealyticum, plague, cholera, typhus fever, conjunctivitis and skin infections. The antibiotic is often used to treat gonorrhea, syphilis and anthrax in patients allergic to penicillins. It is also approved for treatment of other less common bacterial infections.

How to take Tetracycline?
Tetracycline adult dosage for moderate infections is either 500 mg twice a day or 250 mg four times a day. Severe or chronic infections are treated with 500 mg four times a day. Children over 8 years of age are administered 25 – 50 mg/kg in four divided doses. Treatment usually lasts for 7-14 days and should be continued for at least 48 hours after subsidence of symptoms. Pills should be taken on an empty stomach for the drug to work better. However, if it upsets your stomach, taking it with food is recommended.

What are Tetracycline side effects?
Tetracycline most common side effects are of gastrointestinal character and may include: nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, vomiting, lack of appetite, difficulty swallowing. It can also provoke headaches, dizziness, fatigue, photosensitivity, tinnitus, discoloration of teeth, unexplained rash and itching skin. In rare cases the drug may cause stomach cramps, watery diarrhea, bloody stool, fever, joint pain and blurred vision. Report to your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects while receiving this antibiotic.

When is Tetracycline contraindicated?
Tetracycline is contraindicated to pregnant women and children under 8 years of age. It shouldn’t be administered to patients with renal insufficiency, leucopenia and known hypersensitivity to any antibiotic of the tetracycline group.
