What is Trimox?
Trimox (also known under the name amoxicillin) is an antibiotic drug used for treating numerous bacterial and viral infections. It was developed by a team of researchers in the 1960’s in England, and entered the market in 1972. Due to its high level of absorption in comparison with other antibiotics like it, Trimox became very popular, and has great success even today. In fact, it can be found on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines. Trimox belongs to the aminopenicillin family, which means that it is suited to treat both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

What are the indications for using Trimox?
The list of conditions Trimox can treat includes:

  • Acute otitis media – an inflammatory disease that affects the middle ear. Symptoms include pain, discharge, loss of hearing and irritability.

  • Urinary tract infection – an infection of the urinary tract, which can be of two types. The first is cystitis, and affects the bladder, while the second is pyelonephritis, and affects the kidneys. Symptoms of the infection include painful urination, flank pain and fever.

  • Salmonella – a bacterial infection that affects the intestinal tract. Salmonella usually spreads through contaminated water or food (such as undercooked eggs, meat). In some people, infection causes no symptoms whatsoever, while others experience fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

  • Gonorrhea – a sexually transmitted infection that affects both men and women. Symptoms include painful urination and penile discharge for men and pelvic pain or vaginal discharge for women.

  • Anthrax – a deadly disease spread by spores. Though it usually only infects animals, Trimox can be taken as a preventative measure against human infection.

Other conditions Trimox treats include sinusitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, Lyme disease and Chlamydia.

What is the dosage of Trimox?
Trimox is commonly sold in the form of 250 mg and 500 mg tablets. These should be taken orally, and most infections require a 500 mg dose three times a day.

What are the contraindications for using Trimox?
Trimox should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, patients allergic to Trimox, as well as those with a history of kidney disease or infectious mononucleosis. Trimox is also known to interact with certain anticoagulants, allopurinol, methotrexate, uricosurics, typhoid vaccine and certain antibiotics.

What are the adverse effects of Trimox?
According to studies conducted, common side effects of Trimox may include rash, vomiting, colitis, nausea, and diarrhea. Less-common side effects include insomnia, sensitivity, and anxiety.
