What is Erythromycin?
Erythromycin is a well-known drug used for a multitude of problems including breakouts of acne. Erythromycin is a common antibiotic with a wide range of use, which is in the WHO’s list of Essential Medicines. Erythromycin works by inhibiting Propionibacterium acnes, a bacterium responsible for human acne, which feeds on the skin’s sebaceous glands and causes inflammations. Erythromycin doesn’t kill bacteria per se, but it does prevent it from replicating, which eventually stops the infection and inflammation.
What are the indications for using Erythromycin?
Erythromycin is prescribed to treat acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris can refer to any pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and greasy skin, which usually occurs in the face, chest, and back. The most common cause of acne is puberty and adolescence. During this period, the body undergoes many hormonal changes. For example, one of these changes is the release of sex hormones, which cause the sebaceous glands to swell and increase the possibility of acne. Sometimes acne is just a genetic tendency, affecting youth over a long hereditary line. Studies have also linked acne growth to psychological and dietary factors.
What is the dosage of Erythromycin?
Erythromycin comes in the form of tablets, so when treating acne 500 mg of it should be taken twice per day. Acne is a long-term problem, so it’s only natural that treatment is also prolonged. The minimal recommended term of treatment is 10 weeks, with 3 months being the standard term.
What are the contraindications for using Erythromycin?
Erythromycin should not be taken by anyone allergic to macrolide antibiotics, including erythromycin and clarithromycin. It is also unsuitable for patients who are using other skin care drugs or products, because skin may become dry and irritated. The effect of Erythromycin on pregnant and breastfeeding women is unknown.
What are the adverse effects of Erythromycin?
In rare cases, side effects may include skin irritation, itching, dryness, peeling or burning, inflammation of the face, nose and eyes, erythema, irritation of the eyes. Tenderness of the skin, oiliness, and skin discoloration were also reported.
Rarely, if erythromycin in used for a prolonged period of time, it may result in fungal infections of the skin.
